Witnesses reported seeing a blaze that covered a circumference of 400 to 600 feet after a natural gas line exploded...CBS Channel 11
This is why a 500 foot setback is not okay from homes, schools, parks, hospitals....
"Laura Harlin, who lives about a mile from the scene, told CNN she heard a rumbling noise that sounded like a jet engine when the explosion occurred. She said her house shook and the rumbling lasted for about 10 minutes. " -from the Washington Post

Wake up Denton! The city is working on the city wide ordinance right now. The current proposal is to have a setback of 1000 feet but with a possible allowable variance of 500 feet. What happens is the gas companies sweep in promise royalties and give assurances that drilling will be safe. That is how we now have the wells across from McKenna park. The same promises were given to the people of Corinth but luckily they realized what was happening before it was too late.

This explosion was the responsibility of the gas company and pipline company. When you look at the overhead pictures of the explosion you can see the pipeline was at the very edge to the right of the clear cut right of way. The pipeline should have been running down the center of the right of way and clearly marked.
The utility company should have had dig test come and mark where that line was.
Two errors cause 3 deaths: 1st error improper placement of pipeline in the easement area. Gas company at fault. 2nd error utility company not locating pipeline before drilling. Dig Test should have been notified before any drilling occurred.
These errors could have occurred anywhere: next to a park, home, hospital, school, university, nursing home, your home!
An AP article today says that the utility company followed proper procedures, had a map and made the call.
So I wonder who the Texas Railroad Commission will blame the poorly marked pipeline on? Maybe Bill White had something to do with it, yeah that is probably it.
I am sure Rick Perry will say he will not debate Bill White until Mr. White admits responsibility for this disaster.
